Si vous passez par la Tate Modern à Londres, faites un petit détour par la galerie video et photo Wapping Project Bankside sur Hopton Street. C’est la petite soeur du Wapping Project (l’un de mes endroits préférés dans l’East End Londonnien, sous l’égide de Jules Wright). Cette nouvelle galerie a ouvert ses portes en Octobre dernier avec les photographies d’Elina Brotherus, suivie de celles de Peter Marlow, du groupe Magnum. Tous deux grands noms de la photo ayant déjà exposé à Wapping à une toute autre échelle, mais ici la taille des clichés est relativement petite, leur donnant presque un air domestique, plus familier. Et comme c’est également une galerie pour promouvoir les artistes, ici vous pouvez acheter les oeuvres... ou vous rabattre sur les livres qui sont présentés devant le bureau tout vitré.
La prochaine expo à la galerie, qui aura lieu du 21 Janvier au 20 Février est celle de Lillian Bassman. Je ne connais pas son travail mais suis bien intriguée par cette artiste qui fut élevée au rang de grande photographe dans les années 40 pour ensuite tout balancer pour enfin ressortir ses clichés deux décennies plus tard et les retravailler sur Photoshop... à l’âge de 87 ans !
J’ai toujours émis des réserves quant à l’usage de Photoshop dont on use et abuse trop facilement et suis intriguée par cette artiste choisie par Jules, dont j’approuve en général les choix.
Enfin, mais que fait cette table à dessiner au milieu de la galerie ? Je me demande si Josh Wright (architect à qui l’on doit la rénovation de la centrale hydraulique de Wapping) a lui aussi décidé de quitter le dessin analogue pour la conception assistée par ordinateur ?

If you’re passing by the Tate Modern in London, take a look around the corner, on Hopton St. and visit this new video and photography gallery. It is the little sister of the Wapping Project, one of my favourite venue in East London, run by Jules Wright. It opened last October and has already shown two great names, Elina Brotherus and Peter Marlow, Magnum photographer. Both had already exhibited in Wapping at a much larger scale, but in this gallery Peter Marlow’s work seemed more familiar, less intimidating perhaps. And because it is also a commercial venture, here you can buy the works. The gallery also proposes a few selected books for sale in front of the glass boxed office, where sat Lydia Fulton (who runs the Wapping talks in the Glass house, see earlier post).
The next show in the Gallery, running from the 21st of January until the 20th of February is of Lillian Bassman’s work. I personally don’t know her work but was intrigued to see that once celebrated fashion photographer of the 40’s she then ditched all her work to finally retrieve it an re-work the prints on Photoshop, aged 87 !
I’ve always been sceptical of the usage and deceitful powers of this much-used and abused software, so I am very intrigued to see these prints, as I usually applaud Jules for her choices.
Now for this drawing table in the middle of the Gallery, I wonder if this is Josh Wright’s (architect, for whom I worked for a while and who turned the Wapping Power Station into the building it is today !). Would he have swapped the analogue drawing for the computer generated as well ?
